Winter Equestrian Festival 2016

Palm Beach International Equestrian Center

Wellington, FL

What an exciting day for the group who attended the Winter Equestrian Festival!

Despite temperatures only reaching about 60 degrees and wind gusts of 28 mph, everyone who signed up ... showed up.  Here we are, bundled up and ready for the adventure.

Our tour guide, Barbara Lang, was an experienced equestrian and shared many back stories about what goes into dressage and hunter/jumper competitions.  Lunch at the Tiki Restaurant was exceptional.  Our seating on a deck facing the International Ring had a perfect view of the riders performing there.  And, almost miraculously, our tables were buffered from the wind and the sun came out to warm us.

The Winter Equestrian Festival attracts more than 3000 horses and 2800 riders from 49 states and 30 countries, making it the largest equestrian competition in the world. The Winter Equestrian Festival is where the U.S.  Equestrian Team is forged and, this being an Olympic year, many Olympic hopefuls come here to qualify.  It is said that British Royalty is often among the spectators at these world-class events.   If so, we didn't see them.  Perhaps they too were bundled up and unrecognizable,  as we were!

Betty Williams once again opened her beautiful home for a Gators New Years Eve Party!  A great time was had by all who enjoyed an abundant feast. Each of us brought something to the table to share.  Some of my favorites were Doc Scheer's Elk Sausage, the result of his recent hunting adventure, and Bill Lobb's famous roast pork!  Thank you, Betty, for your generous hospitality and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our gator family.

Warmest Regards,

Dorothy Rettay, V.P. Socials
