An Interview with Paul R. Welsh

Tell us the basics about yourself (name, where do you live, immediate family, occupation):

My name is Paul R Welsh and I live in Jupiter Farms.  My 19 year old son lives with me when not attending college.  I am a CPA offering many services to the public.  For more information on my business, please see my website: mytaxnerd.com.

Origin (country? or city/state where you were born, family ancestry)

I am originally from Ocean City, Maryland, the resort island off the coast of Maryland.  I am the second of seven children.  From my last name and the fact there were so many children my mother had us use a sign in and sign out book, we are Irish.

Years in ski club? How did you find it?

This is my first year in the ski club.  Another member was kind enough to introduce me to the club and many of the wonderful folks gathering frequently for fun and excitement.

What is your favorite winter sport: (i.e., downhill skiing, snowboarding, CAT skiing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, tobogganing, etc.)

After a few athletic knee injuries, I am relegated to snowmobiling and sitting by the fire enjoying an adult beverage with friends.  I have also been known to hit the islands for some diving.

Any other sports you enjoy?

I do enjoy boating, fishing, scuba diving, flying planes, golf, racquetball, bowling, bike riding, and, I think ESPN calls it a sport, poker.

Memorable experiences (w Gators or ski related):

The most recent trip to Sebastian was a tremendously fun time.  Kudos to Debbie and the gang for putting together such a fun time.

What social activities and special activities are your favorites?

I really enjoy all activities where good friends get together and enjoy each other’s company.

What do you wish we did more frequently?

It might be a good thing to arrange more group discounts to local activities such as movies, the theater, concerts, museums, and other ticketed venues.

Why are you a member? (or What does being a member mean to you?)

I became a member to have fun.  I think the whole idea of the club is to have fun.  It provides a chance to do activities better enjoyed in a group.  It gives a venue to meet wonderful folks and experience good times.

Have you ever served on a committee or had a leadership position?

In this club I have not served on any committee or held a leadership position. I believe in the club so much, I would volunteer for any position where I could make a positive impact.

Future plans:

I am open to most anything.

Tell us anything you would like to share

I certainly feel the club is fulfilling its mission in that it is FUN.  The comradery and exciting experiences make this club one to be part of.  From ski trips to theme parties, to weekend getaways, to happy hours, there is a fun niche for everyone.  For readers who are thinking of joining, even if you don’t ski, come on in – we welcome you home.  For current members, bring a friend to come meet us.  It has been said, “There are no strangers, only friends we have not met yet.”

Last week she won the National Championships in U14 Platinum.
Her sponsor "Shipskis" today posted on there face book page. If you could all "like" Lacie's pic on Shipskis Facebook page and maybe comment it would be so helpful to me as they assist in many of her needs for equipment and shipping. We are back next week so see all of you at the next meeting. Hope everyone is GREAT

Lacie Greenwald rules the ski slopes

By John Evenson

Click here to see the CBS video report.

It may seem like Hobe Sound's Lacie Greenwald would be out of her element on the ski hill, but as it turns out she feels right at home. Greenwald is the best 12 year old ski racer in the country, even though she was born, raised, and still lives in South Florida.

"She's (just like) the Jamaican bobsled team," says her father Brett, "I mean really that's what it comes down to."

"I just love the sound of the snow when you make the edge to edge," says Lacie, "it's amazing!"

Lacie has been skiing since she was two years old, and began competing when she was eight. She is limited to only 60 days of training a year when she travels to the toughest slopes across the country, as well as Canada and Switzerland. The reigning National Champion makes the most of those trips, already on the Olympic watch for 2018.

"She's a beast," admits her mother Jeneane Wakula, "she looks like this little tiny flower, but she's a maniac when she gets out there, don't let her fool you."

"I just think her focus is at such a higher level than the other kids," says her father, "because she doesn't have it every day she doesn't take it for granted. She yearns for it, she wants it."

Lacie Greenwald may be completely out of her South Florida element on the snowy ski slopes, but she says she feels right at home.

Youngest Club Member a future Olympian?

At the last General Meeting, we had the pleasure to meet our newest, youngest member: 12 year old Lacie Greenwald; and her parents: Dr Brent Greenwald and Jeneane Wakula.

Last year, Lacie first made headlines by winning a bronze medal in the 2012 NASTAR National Ski Championship in Winter Park, Colorado. This year, she not only has a gold medal under her belt in the national competition in Aspen, but her coaches are beginning to compare her form to that of world champion skier Mikaela Shiffrin.

Lacie has a bright smile and a great presence. As she told the audience at the General Meeting: "I  love to ski and specially the people I meet when I do. I have been skiing for a long, long time..." and in her case, since she started at 2, it is over 80% of her life!

A skiing racing career is expensive. Lacie is trying to support hers through sponsorships...please visit her Facebook page and "Like" her!

Lacie, Brett and Jeneane have joined the Gator's  SNOWMASS, COLORADO SKI TRIP.
