Canazei Skiing

The skiing above Canazei divides onto two sides of a steep valley. The gondola from the main street of the village heads up on the right hand side of this valley to an intermediate station at Pecol.

Here there are two options: another gondola, the Toé lift, which rises into the main ski area but not to the top of the ridge above, or the Col dei Rossi cable car, which heads up onto the steep and windy ridge. Both of these lifts access the main ski area on this side of the valley - a wide open bowl of intermediate runs above the tree line.

Skiers wanting to stay in this bowl have a choice of the gondola or cable car for repeated runs, or the chairlifts Kristiana, Belvedere or Sass Becè. This last one is the highest and is also the vital link over to Arabba, part of the popular Sella Ronda circuit in the "green" or anti-clockwise direction. The journey down to Arabba is an easy intermediate cruise and is described in the companion Ski Arabba site. This direction also provides access on skis to the Marmolada ski area.

Alternatively headed down below the tree line takes the skier onto a red - and sometimes crowded and icy - run down to Pian Frataces and the road which winds up from the Val di Fassa to join the routes over the Sella pass or the Pordoi pass.

If conditions are good, there is a pleasant run down through the trees to Canazei which ends somewhat abruptly at the end of the village near some farm buildings. (From the end of the run it is a 5-10 minute walk through the village to the gondola station on the main road.)

Skiers wanting to head over in the other direction from Pian Frataces to the area above Campitello and below the Passo Sella will be taking the Pradel-Rodella gondola. This deposits the skier into another bowl above the treeline. To the left chairlifts rise up to the Col Rodella at just under 2500m, while to the right chairlifts offer the option of heading over to the Selva area.

Once at the top oif the Norei-5 Dita chairlift, for example, it is possible to take the long easy intermediate run all the way down to Plan de Gralba and the connections into the area above Selva, a ski area which is described in more detail in the companion Ski Val Gardena site.

Returning from this area, it is possible (in good conditions) to ski all the way from the top of Sasso Levante chairlift through to Canazei some 1000m below.

More information about the location:

Ski Canazei

Canazei is a village of just under 2000 inhabitants in the Ladin-speaking part of the Dolomites area of Italy. It is one of the main winter centres in the Val di Fassa (Fassatal for the German-speaking part of the South Tyrol) and occupies a strategic position in the popular Sella Ronda ski circuit.

Canazei is often mentioned in conjunction with the neighbouring village of Campitello, which has its own connection into the vast Sella Ronda area with a lift from the resort heading up near the Sella pass.

Canazei History

The name "Canazei" is apparently connected with reeds and the settlements in the valley were sparsely inhabited until the development at the start of the 20th century. A major influence on the economy of the area was the building of the road over the Passo Pordoi and through to Arabba and down to the neighbouring province of Belluno. The settlements which had grown to serve the increasing tourist trade were badly damaged during the fighting between the Austrian and Italian armies in the First World War and the area took time to recover until the building of more lifts in the 1960s and later decades.

Canazei Today

These days Canazei is one of the most important stops on the Sella Ronda ski circuit in winter, with connection to the east and Arabba over the Passo Pordoi (where the road mentioned above also runs) and to the north and the Val Gardena over the Passo Sella. The town is now increasingly dependent on winter and summer tourism and the population has almost doubled in the last thirty years. However the inhabitants make a particular effort to keep to traditional customs and ways, and the village is a centre of the Ladin culture with traditional festivals held during the year.
